Telstra has changed how its network name displays on customers’ devices in a controversial move to encourage more people to get the Covid jab.

The Australian telco added the tagline “#LetsVaxx” to its users’ devices on Thursday as part of its campaign, which offers customers who get fully vaccinated bonus Telstra Plus Points.

Fully vaccinated members of the loyalty program from late September will receive 2500 Telstra Plus Points, then go into a 100 million point prize draw.

A spokesperson said 20 people would receive five million points each and up to $3500 credit – enough to cover the cost of their eligible Telstra services for a year.

Telstra CEO Andrew Penn said the company wanted to do what it could to help the country out of the Covid-19 pandemic.

This is a global emergency and to beat this we need to come together – just as we’ve done in the face of natural disasters and hardships gone by. I urge Australians to get vaccinated as soon as possible and we want to reward our customers for doing so, Mr Penn said.

Australians getting vaccinated will make an incredible difference – we can help protect each other, lessen the financial hardship on families, and reduce the toll on our wellbeing caused by the uncertainty and isolation from rolling lockdowns, he said.

The company revealed Telstra Plus members who chose not to or couldn’t get the vaccine would still be rewarded with a free movie, food delivery discounts, and discounts on items in its rewards store to help ease the burden and boredom of lockdowns.

Along with its network name change, Telstra also launched a social media campaign with satirist Mark Humphries, who features in material busting common Covid myths.

Mark’s sharp satire successfully busted conspiracy theories around 5G and now we’re calling on him to help cut through the noise and debunk Covid-19 vaccination myths, Mr Penn said.

More than 5500 employees recently took up Telstra’s offer of a $200 reward to get vaccinated.
