Now you can search every tweet ever sent

Last month, Topsy announced that they had opened their service to searches that included every tweet sent since July of 2010. Now they’ve included every tweet since Twitter started.

The very first tweet was sent on March 21, 2006 by Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey to announce that the service was live, and read “just setting up my twttr.” From that point on, the number of tweets snowballed and now Topsy says that they have indexed more than 540 billion tweets in all. Every Twitter message sent since that first one in 2006.

Tops has search operators that allow you to get pretty specific about your search and find a lot of targeted tweets. Tops co-founder and CTO Vipul Prakash says that it’s:

“We started Topsy to give our users a tool for capturing actionable segments of public conversation … by adding a full historical index, now we can even look even further back to the very first Tweets 7 years ago. We have all of Twitter indexed, meaning our users have access to the best, most accurate view of the world’s social conversation on the planet.”

That is very cool. Utilizing the Topsy tools, we can search for “Arab Spring”, which brings up about 10,371 tweets over the past ten days. We can then narrow that by dates, to include only tweets sent from Jan 1, 2012 to Dec 31, 2012. From there, we can filter to English only tweets. Then only tweets with photos or links. Then look only at those who are influencers.  The ability to narrow gets sharper and sharper.

This is an amazing resource and idea and a real piece of Internet history now cataloged and available for purusal.
